The following is intended to introduce you to Lumbrella, explain what it is, why it was invented, the development goals, and how it works.
Over the last 10 years there have been significant developments with orthotic design and methodology. We’ve pushed the boundaries to find a spinal solution that forms, fits and functions, better than it ever has before, using all the Motion Control principles in one prefabricated LSO. Our overall goal was to improve patient care, convenience and ease of use to the Orthotist...not price point. It is not another “me too” product for $99. We're not selling a brace, we are offering a solution.
WHAT IS Lumbrella?
Lumbrella is a new class of pre-fabricated, custom-fit, Lumbar Sacral Orthoses (LSO). It provides the versatility and comfort of a pre-fabricated brace with the performance of a custom LSO.
WHY WAS IT INVENTED?
Despite improvements with surgical procedures and instrumentation, the use of non-invasive approaches to resolve and manage low back pain, is on the rise.
DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVE
The objective was to combine all the benefits of custom fabricated spinal bracing with the benefits provided by pre-fabricated bracing. We wanted to address all of the 5 common principles related to maximizing motion control and promoting healing and pain relief (see chart at right).

HOW DOES IT WORK?
To achieve sound mechanical fitting, an understanding is needed of how the orthosis interfaces and fastens to the body and how the body changes shape and alignment when standing, lying and sitting.
Optimally, we zone materials that are more rigid over areas for which we are seeking static immobilization and softer materials over areas for which we can use compression as an advantage to axially unload the spine.
Lumbrella has 3 main components:
1. Outer Belt 2. Dynamic Lumbar Panel 3. Inner Belt & Abdominal Panel
OUTER BELT - The outer belt contains mid-line mass and offers compression without elasticity. Lumbrella's outer belt is tightened by an adjustable, mechanically advantaged, lacer pull. Pull length can be adjusted to match individual reach requirements.
DYNAMIC LUMBAR PANEL - Our patented
Dynamic Lumbar Panel (DLP) becomes a static posturing element. An innovative combination of material deformation, and the micro adjustable Boa® Fit System, allows the Paraspinal Beams to perfectly conform to every lordosis.

INNER BELT & DYNAMIC ABDOMINAL PANEL: The combination of the Inner Belt and the Abdominal Panel acts as a true 3 Point Force System driving extension and controlling lordotic positioning. Tightening the Inner Belt (with the Outer Belt controlling midline mass) drives intercavity compression resulting in axial unloading. Lumbrella's unique design lets the Inner Belt pass through the Outer Belt and allows the Inner Belt to be tightened independently from the Outer Belt.
